If you’ve started looking into Assistance with Daily Living or personal care under the NDIS, you’ve probably hit a wall of jargon pretty quickly. It’s a lot to take in, and when you’re already flat-out just managing day-to-day life, the last thing you need is a 50-page manual written in “NDIS-speak.”
You’re likely here because you need clear answers. You want to know what “personal care” actually looks like in practice, how to get the funding for it, and, most importantly, how to find someone you actually feel comfortable having in your home.
Let’s break it down:

What exactly is “Personal Care” in the NDIS world?

The NDIS call it “Assistance with Daily Life.” But in the real world, it’s just the stuff we all do to get through the day; the things that can become a massive mountain to climb if you’re living with a disability.
For us at Bramble, it’s about more than just “ticking off tasks.” It’s about dignity. It’s about having the support you need to feel like yourself. We’re talking about:
  • The Morning and Night Routine: Getting in and out of bed, showering, dressing, and getting ready to face the day.
  • Looking and Feeling Your Best: Grooming, hair care, and shaving.
  • Staying Healthy: Help with mobility, moving safely around your home, and keeping on top of your medications.
  • Fuelling Your Body: Planning meals, doing the grocery shopping, and getting help in the kitchen so you’re eating well, not just “getting by.”
Think of it this way: personal care is the foundation. If that part of your day is stressful or unreliable, everything else—work, hobbies, seeing friends—becomes ten times harder.

How do you get Personal Care into your NDIS plan?

If you don’t already have an NDIS plan, getting the funding can feel like a bit of a shambles, but don’t let that put you off. It’s basically about demonstrating that these supports are “reasonable and necessary” for you to live an independent life.
  1. Check your eligibility: You need to be under 65 and have a permanent disability that significantly impacts your ability to do these daily tasks.
  2. Gather your “Evidence”: This is the boring bit, but it’s vital. You’ll need reports from your GP, OT, or specialists that clearly explain that your disability is permanent, poses a barrier to you being able to do your personal care alone, and exactly how/why you need a hand. Don’t be shy here; be honest about your most difficult days, because these are the ones where you need support the most.
  3. The Planning Meeting: This is your big moment. When you talk to your LAC or Planner, don’t just say “I need help.” Tell them what that help would change. For example: “Having someone help me get showered and dressed in the morning means I actually have the energy to go to my job and get in some exercise in the afternoon. With out that support I am unable to properly participate in my life”

What’s changing on July 1st, 2026?

If you’re starting the process now (early 2026), you’ll likely find yourself moving into the New Framework right as your plan is being finalised. Here is what you need to know:
  • The “Support Needs Assessment”: From July, the traditional planning meeting is being replaced by a more structured conversation. An NDIA assessor will use a tool (I-CAN v6) to walk through your whole day to identify gaps.
  • Impairment Notices: Since January 1, 2025, new participants have been receiving an “Impairment Notice” with their access letters. This lists exactly what the NDIS has accepted as your disability. If you’ve been in the scheme a while, you’ll get yours when you transition to the new framework from July 2026.
  • Flexible Budgets: The new system is designed to give you a “flexible budget” rather than tiny, locked-in line items. It gives you more say in how you spend your funding, provided it’s for NDIS-approved supports.
  • The “Supports List”: The way you spend your money is now governed by a list of allowed supports. You can find this on the NDIS website.

Choosing a provider: Why the “Who” matters more than the “How”

This is where the rubber hits the road. You can have all the funding in the world, but if the person walking through your front door makes you feel awkward or rushed, it’s not working.
When you’re looking at providers, you’ll see two main types:
  • The Big Corporates: They have all the bells and whistles – huge rosters, flashy offices layers of management, but you’re often just a “slot” in their calendar. You might get a different person coming to shift every week, which means explaining your routine again… again.
  • The DIY Platforms: These give you “choice,” but they also give you a second job as an HR/rostering manager. You’re the one checking qualifications and clearances and figuring out what to do when they call in sick ten minutes before your shift.

The Bramble Way:

We built Bramble Support because we think there’s a better way. We believe personal care should feel safe and secure, and be delivered by the same small team, in partnership with you and your needs.

  • Consistent Faces: We don’t do the “revolving door” of strangers. We build a small, dedicated team around you so you can actually build trust.
  • Bespoke Matching: We don’t just send whoever is free. We look for someone who actually “clicks” with you. And if we don’t have the right fit on our books? We’ll go out and hire someone specifically for you…you can even sit in on the interview if you’d like.
  • We Handle the Headaches: You know your routine better than anyone, but we are wizzes at handling the boring stuff, the vetting, the insurance, the compliance, and the back-fill if someone gets the flu is all handled by us.

Confidence starts with the right support.

Personal care isn’t about “being looked after.” It’s about independence and having the freedom to live your life on your own terms.
Whether you’re beginning your NDIS journey or you’re fed up with your current provider sending strangers to your door, know that you have the right to demand better. You deserve support that is consistent, local, and respectful.

Need a hand figuring out your next steps?

If you’re tired of the “support worker lottery” and want to talk about building a local, consistent team that actually knows how you like your coffee and your personal care routine, give us a buzz at Bramble Support. We’re always up for a no-obligation chat to see if we’re the right fit for you.
