How to Switch NDIS Providers Without the Stress

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably had that sinking feeling in your gut when you realise your support provider just isn’t working for you anymore. Maybe it was the sixth different support worker at your door this month, or maybe you’re just tired of being treated like a number on a corporate spreadsheet.
Whatever the reason, if your current support isn’t “clicking,” you have the right to change. The NDIS is designed to give you choice and control, and sometimes, that means choosing to walk away from a provider that just isn’t working for you.

Why People Make the Switch

Honestly, it’s rarely about one big disaster. It’s usually a “slow drip” of frustrations:
  • You’re tired of explaining your routine and the layout of your house to a new person every week.
  • You called the office with a simple question and didn’t hear back for three days.
  • You’re using a platform provider that leaves you to do all the heavy lifting of recruiting and interviewing, and you’ve simply had enough.
  • You’ve moved house, or your life has changed, and your old provider just can’t keep up.
Whatever the reason, if it doesn’t feel like a partnership anymore, it’s okay to look elsewhere.

The Simple 4-Step Switch

Changing providers isn’t the paperwork mountain people fear. It’s actually just a few conversations, and any provider worth their salt will understand and make it work like clockwork.

1. Check Your Service Agreement (The “Notice Period”)

Before you do anything, find your Service Agreement and look for the “Termination” or “Notice Period” clause. Most providers require 14 or 28 days’ notice.

The Bramble Tip: You don’t have to wait until the end of your NDIS plan to switch. You can switch at any time, provided you give the notice period listed in your contract.

2. Give Notice

You don’t owe anyone a massive explanation, but you do need to put in writing that you wish to exit the service. A simple email is best so you have a record: “Hi [Provider Name], please accept this email as formal notice to end services for [Participant Name]. Our last shift will be on [Date].”

3. The “My Provider” Request (The 2026 Shortcut)

In the old days, you had to call the NDIS and wait on hold for an hour just to link a new provider. But the latest updates in the my NDIS portal have a much better “self-service” shortcut.

  • We send the request: If you choose Bramble, once we’ve agreed on your start date, we will jump into our portal and send a “Relationship Request” directly to your plan.

  • You just click ‘Accept’: You (or your nominee) will see a notification in your my NDIS app or portal. You simply review it and hit “Accept.”

  • No more phone queues: This automatically records us as a “My Provider.” It’s faster, cleaner, and means our invoices get through to your Plan Manager without any “computer says no” errors.

4. Ending the Old Relationship

While we can start the new relationship, we can’t exactly “fire” your old provider for you. You still need to tidy up your portal list:

  • Ask your Plan Manager: According to the latest NDIS rules, Plan Managers can now “self-service” to end a relationship in the portal. Once your notice period is up, just tell them: “I’ve finished my contract with [Old Provider], can you please end the relationship in my portal?”

  • The Manual Way: You can still remove them yourself in the portal or by calling the National Contact Centre (1800 800 110).

Crucial Note: Only end the relationship with an old provider in the portal AFTER they have sent their final invoice and it has been paid. Doing it too early can block their final payment and cause unnecessary headaches.

The Bramble Transition

We know that the “gap” between providers is what worries people most. “Who will help Mum with her shower on Monday if the new team hasn’t started?”

At Bramble, we’re experts at the “Smooth Handover.” We can sit down with you while you’re still in your notice period, get to know your routine, and find the right people for you so that on the day your old contract ends, your new Bramble team is ready to knock on the door.

Ready for a change that actually feels like a relief?

If you’re tired of the “Corporate Care” grind and want to see what a managed, local, neighbourly approach looks like, give us a shout. We’d love to hear your story and help you figure out a transition plan that keeps your life running smoothly.
